The changes are a sign of non-confidence in the ruling party. The ruling party have all the times, in the years between the elections to set up the policy and hence is should not be too concerns about the rallies on final day before the polling day.
Historically, Singaporeans believe in non-violence and hence the incident occurred in eve of 2001 general election was an isolated case but also the venue itself was in appropriate, therefore the crowd had to be clear. This caused the dissatisfaction with the police. Hence, the “cooling off” period is deemed unnecessary.
It allows the main steam media to become more prominent and have the final influence over the undecided voters. The opposition parties will have difficulties to make clarification, if the summary of the articles published on the main steam media is not in favour.
Nevertheless, we will modify our strategy accordingly to adjust and make full use of the “cooling off day” to carries out inventory checking for polling day.
