Condolences to the family of the late Mr JB Jeyaratnam and members of the Reform Party

JBJ in Memoriam

The Secretary-General and members of the SPP send their deepest condolences to the family of the late Mr Jeyaratnam on his demise on 30 September 2008. The death of Mr Jeyaratnam also makes the end of an era of the Opposition in Singapore. The SPP hails Mr Jeyaratnam for his courage in fighting the authoritarianism as manifested in the one party rule in Singapore.

We also appluad Mr Jeyaratnam for his idealism, sincerity and honesty in his single-handed struggle for Opposition cause. Mr Jeyaratnam, true to his Opposition cause, fought up to the very end. He managed to discharge himself of his bankruptcy and formed a party to continue the Opposition struggle.

He made great sacrifices - he suffered imprisonment, paid fines, lost personal finances but most of all, Mr Jeyeratnam taught the Opposition that it cannot win the battle against the mighty PAP monolith single-handedly or with a small party. The Opposition must change its strategy, that is to unite and contest the PAP with a bigger force.
