Why did I decide to volunteer at the Potong Pasir Town Council and MP’s Desk?

To be a leader one must have a servant’s heart like Mr. Chiam See Tong, who had displayed what is “Servant-hood”, is not about position or skill, it’s about attitude and he lived with his motto “Service Before Self” that had great impact on me and it changed “My life values” and earnestly coming forward to offering my service as volunteer at "The-Meet-The-People" session.

What are some of the most common activities I have participated in helping?

As a Consultant to Potong Pasir Town Council, it allowed me to have a better understanding of our constituent’s problems; an example is the impact of unemployment toward family and individual. Our constituents “not only suffer the indignity of enforced idleness-they wonder how they can afford to get married, to start a family, and also to have access to all benefits of the society that they should be able to take for granted.” I have also experienced many other cases that involved our constituents and township development.

Poet-philosopher Ralph Waldo Emerson acknowledged, “Every man I meet is in some way my superior and I can learn from him”.

Aside from regular outings to neighbouring countries, I have also participate in festive occasions. Further I have accompanied Mr.Chiam See Tong on house to house visits. I also help regularly at the Meet-The -People session.

The “Meet-The-People session” is one of the constituency activities that one should not give a miss, because it allows me to listen to their needs and understand issues on the ground. It also allows having much deeper relationships with the constituents. As Mr. Woodrow Wilson, the twenty-eight America president, once said, “The ear of the leader must ring with the voices of the people.”

What is my idea of a better Potong Pasir?

Potong Pasir, “My Kind of Town” has it own identity and uniqueness. The living environment and the identity indeed have attracted more new residents to Potong Pasir to make it their home. Any changes to the living environment should improve neighbour relationships, enhance human bonding and safety. The geography of Potong Pasir will allow a transformation into a "city garden villa in the heart of Singapore". Given the opportunity I would like to transform the constituency to a place that residents could dream of in the future. The recent awareness that water is a valuable resource would mean that there has to be a balance between water and dry landscape.

Thus, aside beautify the landscape to the desert quality and I would like to have "green corners" which allow constituents to maximize social interaction and relieve stress caused from work, studies and family challenges.

Beside focusing on the hardware, the software is equally important and I could also like to introduce and provide more education programs to our constituents, such as improvement of relationship, appreciation and take up ownership of your living environment, managing your own finance, staying away from poverty, managing and coping with your stress, improve the education level of our children and how to enhance the businesses of our neighborhood shops etc.

What are some of my most joyous and memorable moments?

The most joyous and memorable moment was the 2006 General Election. The constituents had once again placed the faith and trust in our leader Mr.Chiam See Tong and allowing him and the Party to continue to serve the people in Potong Pasir and Singapore.

One of the beliefs that I have in common with my mentors were to unite all opposition parties in Singapore and to have "two party system in Parliament". Thus, the SDA was formed to serve as a backbone of durable power arrangement among existing political parties. It allow us to tap on common resources and to have mass movement but to stay as a leader of our own political organization by working closely within "an organization in an organization".

It also gives us a broad support and a visible platform to pursue our mission by offering built-in resistance to the evils inherent in absolutism, uphold democracy, the freedoms of expression, the enlargement of opportunity for the poor and powerless, the extension of equal rights to racial minorities, defend Singapore’s interest and make the Government know to increase the sum of human liberty and welfare.

I firmly believe the above mentioned and by sincerely following the above principles would help to better community as a whole and thus to individual gain (by working for the whole community we benefit all individuals within it, including ourselves).
